The Art of Community
Why Community and Mentorship Matter in Building an Art Business…..and why I’m opening my doors to fellow creatives and small business owners the last Wednesday of each month for a Creative Exchange.
When I made the decision to start an art business, I wasn’t exactly standing on solid ground. I had only dabbled in the arts, didn’t know anyone in the local art community, had little knowledge about running a small business, and wasn’t even on social media. To be honest, I felt like I was jumping off a cliff, but I believed that somehow, I’d figure it out.
There was (and still is) so much to learn. From pricing and promoting artwork to understanding the ins and outs of exhibitions, marketing, taxes, websites, etc. It didn’t take long to realize that this journey would be easier if I wasn’t flying solo.
Why We Need Each Other
That’s why I believe so strongly in the power of community and mentorship in building a business. These two things—relationships and guidance—have made the biggest difference for me. They’ve helped me feel less isolated, more confident, and more inspired.
The truth is, no artist becomes “successful” in a vacuum. We grow faster and stronger when we’re surrounded by others who are also trying, experimenting, failing, learning, and creating. Being around other creatives brings new ideas, fresh energy, and often, unexpected opportunities.
Mentorship Can Have Many Faces
One thing I’ve come to appreciate is that mentorship doesn’t have to be formal. Some of the most valuable advice I’ve received has come from casual conversations over coffee, or a quick comment from someone who had already faced a challenge I was currently in the middle of. We all have something to teach and something to learn—no matter what stage we’re in.
Creating the Space I Wish I’d Had
That’s why I’m starting The Creative Exchange, a monthly gathering at inDemand Art Studios—a space for creatives of all kinds to connect, share experiences, ask questions, and support one another. You don’t have to have a degree or be showing in galleries. You don’t have to be “established” or have thousands of followers. You just have to be curious and willing to show up.
Whether you’re just starting out, making a pivot, or looking for some fresh inspiration, I want this space to be a welcoming hub of real talk, helpful advice, and creative camaraderie.
Let’s build something together.
