Some paintings are planned. Others seem to have a mind of their own.
Paint Charmer was one of those paintings.
As I worked, I found myself less interested in controlling the paint and more interested in guiding it—following its movement, responding to each mark, and allowing the next layer to reveal itself. It felt almost like being a snake charmer, coaxing the paint to move and dance rather than telling it exactly where to go. Somewhere along the way, the painting seemed to take over and create itself.
The name came from that experience.
Then, after the painting was framed and on display, one of the first people to see it said, “I see a snake.”
And suddenly, I saw it too.
Once I noticed the sinuous form winding through the layers like a snake being charmed, I couldn't unsee it. Perhaps the painting had been quietly revealing its identity all along.
Paint Charmer is a reminder that sometimes the most interesting discoveries happen when we stop trying to control the outcome and simply allow the creative process to lead the way.
