Some paintings are planned. Others seem to have a mind of their own.
Paint Charmer is one of those paintings.
As I worked, I became less interested in controlling the paint and more interested in guiding it—following its movement, responding to each mark, and allowing the next layer to reveal itself. It felt a little like being a snake charmer, coaxing the paint to move and dance rather than telling it exactly where to go.
The name came from that experience. The act of creating this art felt more like a dance with the paint. When Paint Charmer popped in my head for the title, I knew it was perfect.
After the painting was framed and on display, someone looked at it and said, “I see a snake.”
Suddenly, I saw it too.
Once I noticed the sinuous form winding through the layers, I couldn't unsee it.
Perhaps the painting had been revealing its identity the whole time.
Paint Charmer is a reminder that sometimes the best discoveries happen when we stop trying to control the outcome and let the creative process lead the way.
