The Art of being a professional artist

Talent may get someone's attention, but professionalism is what builds a strong art career.

As both an artist and a gallery owner, I've worked with many talented artists. One thing has become clear: creating beautiful work is only part of the job. How you present yourself and your artwork matters just as much.

Professionalism isn't about making art full time. It's about being someone that collectors, galleries, and clients enjoy working with.

That starts with the details.

Deliver artwork that is exhibition-ready. Install hanging hardware, sign your paintings, give them titles, and use quality materials that reflect the value of your work. Use gallery depth canvases and finish the edges. If the canvas is less than 1.5” it should be framed.

Present yourself professionally, too. Have a current headshot, a well-written bio, and an artist statement ready to share. These are often the first things galleries, media outlets, and collectors will ask for.

When you're invited to participate in an exhibition, treat it like a partnership. Meet deadlines, provide requested information promptly, promote the event to your audience, attend the opening when possible, and pick up your artwork on time. These simple actions show respect for the people investing their time and resources in your success.

Your online presence matters as well. Share your personality, but remember that your social media is often your first impression. Let your artwork remain the focus and present yourself in a way that reflects the professional artist you aspire to be.

The truth is, galleries remember the artists who are reliable. Collectors remember the artists who communicate well. Opportunities often come not only because of exceptional artwork, but because people know they can count on you.

Professionalism isn't about perfection.
